Course Description:
This course is a survey of the scientific discipline of psychology. Survey courses are designed to give you a small amount of understanding of a wide variety of topical areas within the discipline of psychology. Therefore we will cover a broad range of topics from neurobiology and the structure of the brain, to prejudice/discrimination/hate, to learning and memory, to psychological disorders.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Discuss several of the sub-disciplines of psychology in a cogent way.
- Explain how the functioning of the brain leads to various behaviors and cognitions.
- Recall basic psychological vocabulary (e.g. heuristic, prejudice, variable, neuron)
- Explain how variations in biopsychosocial factors impact individual action and thought.
- Use the scientific study of psychology to describe a widely held myth and demonstrate why that myth is false (or at the very least not as clear-cut as many folks believe it is.)
Course Content:
-
We will be tackling approximately one chapter per week. There may be some chapters we will take two weeks to cover. It is my expectation that you will have the chapter for the week read by Tuesday evening each week, starting with Chapter 02. For example, Chapter 2 should be read in its entirety by 08/31 at 11:59pm (the midpoint of the week we’ll be talking about Chapter 2).
