Course Description

An introduction to and development of core skills required for success in college and beyond. Technological literacy, student support services, academic knowledge and skills, financial literacy, career/major choices, self-awareness and other factors proven to be associated with college and career success are examined. Satisfies Study and Technology Skills Core Curriculum.

Course Objectives

After the completion of this course, you will:

  • Analyze the purpose of higher education and your role in the university environment.
  • Define how to be successful as a college student at Nevada State College. 
  • Develop your individual academic schedule for completion of a major and minor.
  • Identify the campus resources that are available to you such as academic advising and career services.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to set goals and make responsible decisions regarding academics, major, and career planning, and social relationships.
  • Create a presentation as a collaborative effort with your classmates.
  • Discuss your thoughts to topics as part of in-class group discussions.
  • Construct a weekly planner to help you organize and succeed in completing the weekly tasks.
  • Complete journal entries to assess your progress.

NSC's Outcome: Develop communication abilities
Level:
Course Objectives: Students will know and understand how to organize knowledge in ways that help facilitate good writing and oral communication.
Assessment and Key Performance: These objectives will be demonstrated through a combination of thoughtful participation and interaction in class discussion, unannounced quizzes, tests, presentations and a variety of written and oral responses.

NSC's Outcome: Develop critical thinking abilities.
Level:

Course Objectives: Students will be able to describe the elements that shape individual identity, such as transition, culture, relationships, and values.
Assessment and Key Performance: These objectives will be demonstrated through a combination of thoughtful participation and interaction in class discussion, unannounced quizzes, tests, presentations and a variety of written and oral.

Course Objectives: Students will be able to create and update a professional resume and a cover letter, and know how to use these documents in the job search process.
Assessment and Key Performance:These objectives will be demonstrated through a combination of thoughtful participation and interaction in class discussion, unannounced quizzes, tests, presentations and a variety of written and oral responses.

Assignment Description and Due Dates

There are weekly journal entry assignments. All journal assignments are to be submitted electronically through Canvas.

There will be a final, group project in lieu of a final exam.

There will also be other assignments as noted in the course schedule.   

Exam Description and Due Dates

There are no quizzes or exams for this term 

Assignment and Exam Late Policy

Late Assignments: Late work is not accepted, assigned points are forfeited with a grade of zero for the assignment unless discussed with the instructor in advance.
All assigned work that is due on a specific date is due on or before the date at the beginning of class on the specified date, regardless of a prior excused absence.  Quizzes and exams are given only once, on the date noted. In the event of a prior excused absence, the student will be given the opportunity to take the exam orally.

Attendance and Participation Policy

Attendance is the key to success. Regular class attendance and participation is required for everyone. As a courtesy to your classroom colleagues, please arrive on time to class. Three late arrivals to class are equivalent to one absence. It is your responsibility to sign the attendance sheet upon arrival. Active participation in professional discussions is expected. Also expected is positive and equitable engagement in collaborative work with peers.

I understand, life happens. So, if you need to miss class, it is your responsibility to inquire about what was missed and to submit assignments on time regardless of class attendance. If you must miss a class, if possible, please contact me before class. While you can't make up missed attendance, all class sessions will be recorded and available for fewing later. 

What happens if you miss a class?

  • First time – you will be given an alternative assignment to complete in place of the in-class assignment. You can earn full credit for this assignment.
  • Second absence – you will receive a zero for the in-class assignment.
  • More than 2 absences – you may fail the course and need to retake it.

Because this is a Summer course attendance is vital to understanding and merging into the NSC family.   

 Students are responsible for informing the professor of any foreseen absence prior to such absence.  Students are responsible for all the work covered in class regardless of the reason for being absent. 

Please note that telling me you are not going to be in class, while polite, does not constitute an excused absence. Documented participation in school sponsored activities and documented illness and or death of an immediate family member are the only absences that may be considered excused.

 Students should make sure to be in a comfortable space free of distractions for online sessions.
